nearly 25 years golden age of tv, we’re finally ready to create the ultimate list of the greatest queer TV episodes of all time. Early on, the options for series that are both amply eccentric and artistically top-notch will be a little slim. Luckily, for those of us who love a fuller body, slimming is over. It’s time to celebrate the wonderful and expansive world of queer television that has exploded in growth over the past nearly quarter-century.
With so many options to consider, we decided to open this list with a bang: only the classics. After years of screening week-long teases and low-budget soap operas, it feels both exhilarating and overwhelming to be able to choose from the sheer volume of good queer programming. This list recognizes the trailblazing classics that paved the way, as well as the breakthroughs that forged ahead for our bright and bright future. Some, like “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” are cultural phenomena that live in our veins. While beloved omissions were inevitable, the titles were judged on their consistent quality over many seasons, as well as their staying power and impact on wider queer culture. There have been a lot of fantastic entries just getting started lately, and we can’t wait to see how they evolve over time. With the recent rise of teen dramas (thanks, Greg Berlanti) and alternative comedies populate their colorful worlds with eclectic queer characters, highlighting that shows that are totally – even unquestionably – queer feel important. That’s why we chose to highlight shows with at least one queer character in the main cast. You know, showing where you can find reps without squinting.
