The Director of the Pentagon’s Force Protection Agency, Woodrow Couse, confirmed at a media conference that a Pentagon police officer was attacked on the platform of a DC subway bus that is part of the Pentagon’s transportation center.

“The two sides exchanged fire, causing many casualties,” Kus told reporters at the Pentagon.

According to the Associated Press, a Pentagon police officer who was stabbed later died, according to officials who were not authorized to discuss the matter and did not want to be named.

Kusse refused to confirm the police officer’s death or the suspect’s condition, citing the FBI’s ongoing investigation. Kus said that the incident is over, the Pentagon is safe, and the police are not looking for other suspects.

A Pentagon statement stated that the facility was under lockdown due to “police activity.”

The Pentagon Force Protection Agency, the agency responsible for building security, said on Twitter shortly before noon that the scene of the incident was safe. The blockade has been lifted except for the area surrounding the crime scene.

At the time of the shooting, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, were meeting with President Joe Biden at the White House.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said that when Secretary Austin returned to the Pentagon, he visited the Pentagon Police Operations Center and was “very worried…any casualties.”

Kirby did not confirm the number of casualties and said he could not provide more information.
