The launch of the first unmanned surface vessel (USV) to be built in the region last week marked an important event for the UAE’s maritime industry.
The 12m Blue Essence USV was launched at Mugharraq port and sailed from Fugro’s control and command centre in the UAE to its new home in Al Mirfa, Abu Dhabi.
Over the next few months, Al Mirfa Port will be home to Fugro Pegasus and will serve as the central hub for Fugro’s remote and autonomous operations in the UAE.
The vessel is part of Fugro’s global fleet of Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) and electric remote-controlled vehicles, which are operated by a network of remote operations centres around the world.
Fugro’s Blue Essence USV will set a new standard for subsea inspection solutions, eliminating the need for personnel at sea, reducing carbon emissions by 95%, and enabling real-time insights, faster data processing and data transfer.
David Washbrook, Director of Marine Asset Integrity, Middle East and India, said: “Fugro has been working closely with local authorities and partners in the region to develop regulations and legislation for remote and autonomous ships.
