The ruling coalition collapses and the Polish general fires its deputy prime minister | Media News

Junior partner Accord’s criticism of tax reform seems to have caused problems within the United Right Alliance to get into trouble.

The Polish Prime Minister has fired the head of a junior coalition partner from the government, which has brought uncertainty to the government’s future, which has brought Warsaw into conflict with the European Union.

The United Right Alliance has been in a state of tension for the past year, but junior partner Accord’s criticism of tax reforms in the government’s flagship Polish transaction economy plan seems to have brought the problem to a climax.

“Prime Minister Mateus Morawiecki today asked President Andrzej Duda to remove Yaroslaw Govin from his position as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development, Labor and Technology,” said government spokesperson Piot. Mueller said at a news conference on Tuesday.

Duda’s spokesperson told the National News Agency, the People’s Action Party, that the prime minister’s wishes will be fulfilled and will be announced in due course.

Mueller said that the main reason for Morawiecki’s decision was that Gowin’s department was “not making enough progress” in the Polish transaction.

Last week, Morawiecki fired Anna Koneka, the Deputy Minister of Development, Labor and Technology after criticizing the government’s tax reforms.

Morawiecki’s Law and Justice (PiS) party stated that its reforms would make the situation of most taxpayers better, but the Accord said they would punish the middle class and cause inflation.

The Accord also expressed opposition to the draft amendment to the Broadcasting Act, which critics said was intended to silence independent American television broadcasters that criticized the government. Thousands of Poles protested the bill on Tuesday.

Technically, the bill would prevent non-European owners from owning controlling rights in Polish media companies.

In practice, it will push the American company Discovery Inc to sell its controlling stake in TVN, a network with many channels, operating the all-news station TVN24, and having a flagship evening news program watched by millions of people every day .

The passage of the bill is related to Poland’s reputation for media freedom and foreign companies’ business operations. The proposal has strained relations with this key ally of the United States.

Prime Minister Mateus Morawiecki said on Tuesday that the law is not aimed at anyone, but is intended to protect Polish society, claiming that foreign entities are trying to influence Poland’s debate on COVID-19 vaccination.

“It is through the media that other countries can influence our social life,” he said at a press conference.

On Tuesday, a large number of people chanted “Free Media!” in dozens of cities and towns to support TVN.

Another sign of Gowin’s disagreement with PiS is that there is “meaningless” conflict with the European Union over the government’s judicial reform.

He told reporters on Tuesday: “This dismissal is the de facto collapse of the ruling coalition and the de facto end of the coalition of the right.” The agreement leadership will make a formal decision on its future on Wednesday.

Mueller said that even after Gowin was sacked, the United Right may still have a majority in parliament because some agreement legislators will support government reforms.

“I believe that the United Right and other members of the Polish parliament will support the beneficial reforms we propose,” he said.
