With the conservatives moving towards the worst results ever in the national elections, the center-left Social Democrats took the lead.
According to the expected results, the German center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) leads the conservative party of Chancellor Angela Merkel in the national election because its leader Olaf Scholz claims the party Obtained “clear authorization” for the first time since 2005 to form a government.
According to the broadcaster ZDF’s forecast on Sunday, the Social Democratic Party is expected to get 26.0% of the vote, ahead of Merkel’s CDU/CDU conservatives by 24.5%. This is the worst performance of the CDU in 70 years.
Since the two major groups have not won a majority and are reluctant to repeat the embarrassing “big alliance” of the past four years, the most likely outcome of the vote is a tripartite alliance with the Social Democratic Party or the CDU/CSU.
Negotiations may take months and are likely to involve smaller parties such as the Green Party, which is expected to become the third largest party in the parliament.
“We are now leading in all investigations,” Scholz, the prime minister’s candidate for SDP, said in a roundtable discussion with other candidates after the vote.
“This is an encouraging message and a clear task to ensure that we build a good, pragmatic government for Germany,” he added after an earlier speech to cheerful SPD supporters.
This election is the first time Merkel has not contested since the reunification of Germany in 1990. She will continue to serve as the caretaker leader until the new government is in place.
