The Qatar Pavilion was designed by the internationally renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, who represents a modern interpretation of the four elements of Qatar’s national emblem. Its architectural composition draws inspiration from two crossed and curved swords, including a dhow and an island with two palm trees, which is the core of the national emblem of Qatar.

Santiago Calatrava said: “We are honored to be selected to participate in the design of the Qatar Pavilion at Expo 2020. Our relationship with the State of Qatar and its people is very close to our hearts. The design of the Qatar Pavilion is inspired by the four major elements represented by the Qatar National Emblem, and contributes to the country’s culture. A tribute to the legacy.”

The overlapping buildings of the Qatar Pavilion are composed of two main exhibition space galleries. Gallery 1 serves as an introductory space, inviting visitors to explore the past, present and future of Qatar through visual art, sound effects and music. Visitors are led to the entrance of the main gate, and there are tea pools on both sides of the pavilions on both sides.

Using a combination of technologies from mirror screens and holographic projections to 3D mapping and transparent LED screens, the six illusion displays showcased key themes representing the story of Qatar, using illusions to bring objects in the pavilion to life. These key concepts include the opportunities, mobility and sustainability sub-themes of Expo 2020 and are derived from the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are urgent calls for all countries to take action in a global partnership. These include: heritage, geography, and culture; access to art, science, and technology through creative stimulation; communications, transportation, and exploration; environment, urban development, biodiversity, and natural resources; governance and human capital investment; education, youth employment, and community welfare ; Industrial transformation, pioneering changes and green economy initiatives; innovation and development.

Gallery 2 combines sound, light and vision to provide visitors with a deeply immersive audiovisual experience, evoking from Impressionism to stunning images. With a surround projection screen and 6 illusion mirror totems, visitors will experience experiences ranging from calm to highly emotional, from personal to global, and from concept to concrete.

The Qatar Pavilion is located in the Sustainable Development Zone of Expo 2020, adjacent to the Southwest Hall of the Sustainable Development Pavilion. It covers an area of ​​about 960 square meters and has a total construction area (BUA) of about 620 square meters.
