The National Meteorological Center (NCM) will be at the Dubai Expo 2020 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs of the UAE, on Thursday, January 13, 2022 A special ceremony was held to reveal the winners of the fourth round of funding for the UAE’s Rain Enhancement Science Research Program.
Commenting on the announcement, His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, Director-General of NCM and Chairman of the Second Regional Association (Asia) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) The importance and prominence of the plan in the past three cycles. “
He added: “By attracting and supporting innovative ideas and technologies in the science of precipitation enhancement, the program has achieved several notable milestones in the past few years. The solutions developed have been proven to be confronted with increasingly serious water resources. Regions at risk of shortages are highly relevant and applicable. These efforts clarify the progressive vision of the UAE’s wise leadership to promote scientific innovation and technological progress, while supporting the global pursuit of water sustainability through the implementation of scientifically feasible solutions. “
In November 2021, NCM announced that after the technical review committee meeting, it had identified the eligible research projects funded in the fourth round of the program, and the committee actually convened a meeting to evaluate the complete proposal for the final evaluation stage.
During the one-month evaluation phase, the committee reviewed 8 complete proposals submitted by 51 researchers, scientists and experts from 26 institutions in 9 countries. The evaluation is based on five criteria: comprehensive scientific and technological value, significance and innovation; the qualification of the proposer (researcher and research team) to carry out the project; research methodology; how to incorporate capacity building into the research plan; and resources and budget.
Alya Al Mazroui, Head of the UAE Precipitation Enhancement Science Research Program (UAEREP), said: “The fourth award ceremony is the culmination of the significant progress we have made in the past few years in developing effective solutions to address global water stress. Rain enhancement research. There is no more suitable place to host this event than Expo 2020 Dubai, because it provides us with a perfect platform to showcase our breakthrough innovations to ensure global water security, because water is indispensable for human life Indispensable natural resources.”
Al Mazrouei added: “The program has played an important role in enhancing the reputation of the UAE as a global precipitation enhancement research center by working hand-in-hand with top international scientists dedicated to advancing precipitation enhancement research. We will continue to work with the winners of the past cycle. In order to achieve our mission, and believe that the fourth cycle of the winner’s project will help to open up a new field of precipitation enhancement research on a local, regional and international scale.
The fourth cycle of the UAE’s pioneering rain enhancement program is currently underway, and a grant of US$1.5 million is provided for each award-winning research program, with a distribution time of three years. The grants will enable these projects to move from theory to practice, provided that the winning projects should be implemented within two months after the announcement of the fourth round of winners.
The success of the UAE Precipitation Enhancement Scientific Research Program illustrates the UAE’s leading position in this evolving scientific field. The plan has become the focus of promoting global research cooperation and knowledge transfer to ensure sustainable water resources in countries at risk of water scarcity.
