Britain will have another reason to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III as the government declares a special public holiday to mark the occasion.

The holiday will end on Monday, May 8, ending a three-day weekend that begins with the coronation ceremony. The coronation of Charles’ late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, also marks a so-called bank holiday in the UK.

“The coronation of a new monarch is a unique moment for our country. To mark this historic occasion, I am delighted to announce the addition of a bank holiday to the whole of the UK next year,” said new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. “I look forward to seeing people come together for local and national events across the country to pay tribute to King Charles III in his memory.”

Charles will be crowned on May 6 at Westminster Abbey in London. His ceremonies will aim to preserve the historic traditions of the monarchy while looking to the future after the late Queen’s 70-year reign. The coronation is expected to be shorter and less lavish than the three-hour ceremony for Elizabeth in 1953, in keeping with Charles’ plans for a streamlined monarchy.

The coronation holiday means there will be three long weekends in May next year, with the traditional bank holidays already scheduled for May 1 and May 29.
