The US envoy conveyed the Biden administration’s desire to appoint a new prime minister to stabilize Tunisia’s weak economy.
The White House stated that the Deputy National Security Adviser of the United States met with the President of Tunisia and discussed the urgent need to appoint a prime minister-designate to form a capable government.
Advisor Jonathan Feiner delivered a message from US President Joe Biden to President Keith Said on Friday, “reiterating his and the Biden-Harris government’s personal support for the people of Tunisia, and urging a rapid return to Tunisia’s development path. . Parliamentary Democracy”, the statement said.
It said Finer traveled to Tunisia with Joey Hood, the Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs.
He “discussed the urgency of appointing a prime minister-designate with President Said. He will form a capable government that can resolve the immediate economic and health crisis facing Tunisia.”
“Giving the new government the power to stabilize the economy will also create room for inclusive dialogue on the proposed constitution and electoral reforms,” it added.
The statement said that Fenner also met with civil society leaders and expressed US support for their active participation in building a democratic future.
In a series of shocking moves, Said announced at the end of last month the removal of the prime minister, the adjournment of the parliament and the cancellation of the parliamentary immunity of the 217 members of the lower house of Tunisia.
Critics and opposition leaders referred to the president’s move as a “coup,” and Said refused to accept this description.
U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Brinken spoke with Said last month and urged him to take action to put the country “on the road to democracy.”
The Tunisian President posted on Facebook that Said told US officials that in view of the political, economic and social crises and rampant corruption and bribery, the measures he took were within the framework of implementing the constitution and responding to the wishes of the people.
