The World Nuclear Association (WNA) congratulates the successful start-up of the second unit of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the UAE.
The United Arab Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) announced on Friday that its operations and maintenance subsidiary Nawah Energy Company (Nawah) has successfully activated the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 in the Al Dhafra region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
This important milestone marks the Barakah plant becoming the first multi-unit operating plant in the region, which will further promote the country’s economic growth with cleaner, more reliable and more adequate electricity.
“On behalf of the global nuclear industry, the London-based World Nuclear Association congratulates the ENEC and Barakah teams on successfully completing this important milestone,” said Sama Bilbao Leon, Director General of the World Nuclear Association, today.
“The UAE continues to demonstrate how to use nuclear energy to move towards a clean power system,” she added.
Nawah, a joint venture nuclear operation and maintenance subsidiary of ENEC and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), has safely passed a comprehensive test plan before successfully completing the start-up of the second nuclear power reactor at the Barakah plant.
After full production, the four units of the plant will generate 5.6 gigawatts of electricity, while preventing more than 21 million tons of carbon emissions each year. 7.3 billion smartphones.
