The Jiu-Jitsu Arena in Zayed Sports City Abu Dhabi will be turned into a martial arts festival, with two world championships to be staged in 18 days.
More than 7,000 fighters from over 100 countries will arrive in the UAE capital for the 27th Jiu Jitsu International Federation (JJIF) World Championships, from saturday and runs until November 8th.
This will be followed by the 14th Abu Dhabi World Vocational Championships from 11-19 November.
“In the coming weeks, Abu Dhabi will be the focus of the entire Jiu-Jitsu world as it hosts two of the most prestigious championships on the international sports calendar,” said Mohamed Salem Al Dhaheri, UAE Jiu-Jitsu Vice-President – Jiu-Jitsu The Federation (UAEJJF) said in a briefing on Thursday.
“These world-class events confirm the city’s undeniable status as the global Jiu-Jitsu capital and its ability to host major sporting events that dazzle the world.
“Abu Dhabi is ready to welcome thousands of athletes from around the world. Our UAE national team is determined to recreate the joy we have experienced over the past few months, including the World Games in Birmingham.”
Faisal Al Ketbi wins two gold medals, while Mohammed Al Suwaidi won a silver medal at the Olympics, while Sham Al Kalbani won two bronze medals. All three will be in the home team’s squad for the two-time champion’s medal.
JJIF Director General Joachim Thumfart thanked UAEJJF for hosting the tournament for the third consecutive year.
“We are proud to be crowned champions in Abu Dhabi for the third year in a row,” he said.
“With its first-class infrastructure and sports facilities, the city has always been very welcoming and encouraging to international players. The previous two tournaments were a great success and the response to the event has been very positive.”
Aref Al Awani, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, added: “Hosting the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championships and Jiu-Jitsu World Championships is a testament to Abu Dhabi’s special status as the global Jiu-Jitsu capital.
“I would like to commend the UAEJJF for promoting Jiu-Jitsu and expanding the number of practitioners by developing effective plans and strategies, which help to reaffirm the UAE’s reputation as a global promoter of Jiu-Jitsu.”
