By almost any measure, the U.S. economy has rapidly returned to employment since the spring of 2020, when some 8 million Americans were laid off.
Jobs in nearly every industry rebounded throughout 2021 and most of 2022, spurred by consumer demand for furniture, homes, appliances and autos.
But in the second half of 2022, consumers are starting to shift to spending more on services — having to forego travel and live entertainment due to COVID-19. The hospitality and other hospitality industries added more jobs in November than any other industry.Still, employers face an uphill battle finding talent willing to work for advertised roles — and the hospitality industry still has More vacancies than any other.
Swyft file used Bureau of Labor Statistics data to find the industries that employ the most people in each state. Available data are preliminary for January 2023, excluding agricultural employment, and are seasonally adjusted.
The analysis also provides the percentage of total state employment within the industry sector and the percentage change in employment since January 2022. States are listed alphabetically. Government employees include only the civilian workforce and exclude the military.
