Three friends from the United States, two men and a woman, were found dead in their Airbnb apartment in a city in Mexico. Authorities confirmed they died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Kandace Florence, Jordan Marshall and Courtez Hall were reportedly living in a rental home in a residential complex in La Rosita when they were found dead on October 30. They were all in town for the Day of the Dead celebrations.
Officers found a strong smell of coal in the apartment and later concluded that the three were poisoned by gas inhalation.
A spokesman for the attorney general’s office told ABC News the smell came from a disused gas boiler in the apartment, which released carbon monoxide — a colorless, odorless gas.
A victim was found in the shower, leading authorities to believe it may have started the boiler, the spokesman said.
Commenting on the tragedy, an Airbnb spokesperson told the news outlet, “This is a horrific tragedy and our thoughts are with the family and loved ones as they face a tremendous loss.”

“Our priority now is to support those affected as the authorities investigate what happened, and we can cooperate in any way with the investigation.”
The U.S. embassy in Mexico said it was in contact with the family of the deceased.

“We stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance,” it said in a statement earlier this week.
“Out of respect for family privacy, we have no further additions at this time.”
The latest death comes a month after another American died of carbon monoxide poisoning while on vacation in Mexico City.
