It is not yet known the extent of the injuries sustained in the attack in Haji Hall at the University of Waterloo. The victim was taken to hospital.
One person has been taken into custody, police said. Authorities did not provide a motive for the attack and said they would release more details as they became available.
University of Waterloo student Yusuf Kaymak told CTV News the attack took place during a gender studies class.
“The guy basically walks in and asks the teacher if he’s a professor, he says ‘yes,’ and he pulls out a knife, and after that, everybody runs out,” Kemack told CTV.
“I ran out, and when I got out, a kid was stabbed. His arm was bleeding. I don’t know what happened to the professor,” he said.
There were about 40 students in the class at the time, Kaymak said.
Authorities said the police presence was expected to increase “as officers continue to clear buildings and ensure public safety.”
The University of Waterloo expressed support for the police investigation on Twitter. The campus community is said to be at no further risk.
In a tweet, the university said classes scheduled for Wednesday night in Haji Hall were canceled, but all other campus operations would continue as usual.
