Thunberg joins the Berlin Climate Rally before the German election | Climate News

[ad_1]

As part of the Global Day of Action orchestrated by climate activists, thousands of people participated in protests outside the Capitol.

Tens of thousands of environmental activists-including Greta Thunberg, the spokesperson of the global youth climate movement-held a rally outside the German parliament. Referendum This weekend requires politicians to take stronger action to curb climate change.

Friday’s protests in the capital Berlin are part of a series of rallies around the world, as people have issued terrible warnings that unless greenhouse gas emissions are drastically reduced in the next few years, the planet will face a dangerous rise in temperature.

The idea of a global “climate strike” was inspired by the solo protest of Swedish youth activist Thunberg in Stockholm three years ago. It snowballed into a mass movement until the coronavirus pandemic prevented large gatherings. Activists have only recently begun to hold small gatherings.

The 18-year-old Thunberg addressed a rally outside the Capitol on a stage, telling the crowd that voting is important but must be combined with protests, which puts politicians under constant pressure.

“We can still turn things around,” she cheered. “We demand change, and we are change.”

“The Choice of the Century”

Thunberg and the famous German climate activist Luisa Neubauer accused German politicians of failing to deal with climate change. The country is one of the world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases.

They stated that the plans made by Germany’s major political parties are far-reaching and insufficient to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit)-a more ambitious limit set by the 2015 Paris climate agreement.

German Activists The election on Sunday has been called the “Elections of the Century”, which will resign Angela Merkel, who has long served as prime minister.

They believe that the decision made by the next government will affect the country’s efforts to combat climate change in the coming decades.

This issue has always been a major topic during the election campaign, and most voters put climate protection as their top priority.

Global assembly

Overall, Friday’s demonstrations were held in more than 1,500 locations around the world as planned by the youth movement “For the Future”.

The rally kicked off in Asia with small-scale demonstrations in the Philippines and Bangladesh, and then gradually spread throughout the day.

Other marches and protests are expected in cities and towns in Germany and elsewhere in Europe.

Hundreds of students and environmental activists demonstrated in the capital of the Czech Republic, while in the UK, climate activists temporarily blocked Dover, the country’s busiest ferry terminal.

These events took place five weeks before the UN COP26 summit, which aims to ensure that world leaders take more ambitious climate action to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions that warm the planet.

The landmark United Nations Climate Science Report in August warned that human activities have locked in climate damage for decades-but rapid, large-scale emission reduction actions can still avoid some of the most destructive effects.

So far, the government has not planned to reduce emissions fast enough.
