TII achieves major milestone in advancing high-power laser technology

[ad_1]

The Directed Energy Research Center (DERC) at the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) has achieved a major milestone in the rapid development of fiber laser technology.

Launch of the first high-power fiber laser in the MENA region – a kilowatt-class Ytterbium fiber laser – entirely designed, assembled and tested in the UAE – proving the superior performance of its proprietary state-of-the-art fiber laser development platform , and confirmed the world-class skills and expertise of DERC researchers and engineers, successfully advancing the UAE as a key player in high-power laser sources.

Under the leadership of Principal Laser Researcher Dr. Giuseppe Scurria, the project required the establishment of a state-of-the-art optics laboratory for fiber laser development and fiber processing, the development of unique local capabilities and capabilities in fiber shaping and processing, and the acquisition of industry fiber lasers Best practices and latest theoretical advances in technology, and build strong business relationships with world-renowned laser and photonics companies.

international team

The international team of expert researchers and engineers who made this feat possible include Jawaher Al Ameri, Taif Alhmoudi, Asma Al Ahmadi, Reem Al Ameri and Amit Dubey.

High-power fiber lasers have the advantages of high efficiency, high power, compactness, and durability. They are versatile and can be used in many fields. It is widely used in materials processing, defense, telecommunications, and medical applications.

Due to the growing demand in high-tech fields such as defense and aerospace, higher output power has become one of the main research focuses in the development of fiber lasers, making them the best platform for further research and understanding of nonlinear optical phenomena.

critical turning point

Commenting on the achievement, Dr. Guillaume Matras, Senior Director of TII’s Laser Photonics and Optoelectronics Division, said: “This success is a key piece in the UAE’s journey towards sovereignty in the field of high power laser technology. turning point.

In addition, it promotes the UAE as a frontrunner in the field of fiber lasers, which will eventually open the door to more joint ventures and strategic collaborations with various stakeholders from industry and academia.

“This achievement not only enhances TII’s credibility as a key enabler of transformative technologies in the region, but also strengthens TII’s efforts to advocate for Abu Dhabi and the UAE as a world-leading hub for high-energy R&D.” — trade arab news agency
