DUBAI: News network Al Arabiya celebrated the launch of its new digital platform Akthar in Dubai on Wednesday.

The event was attended by Al Arabiya staff, press assistants and partners including MBC Media Solutions, the media arm of the MBC Group.

The event kicked off with a presentation by the company’s chief operating officer, Jamie Angus, who joined from the BBC earlier this year.

Angus said the new platform was a “journey” into the digital world and would offer stimulating content covering a variety of topics and targeting younger generations.

The new digital platform has nine programmes covering luxury, travel, wellness, finance and lifestyle genres.

These include “Technology” hosted by AI host Mira, the first regional show to be hosted by AI host.

Other shows include “In the Car,” which will focus on luxury and everyday cars with guest riders; “Wellness,” which will provide certified and informative resources and sources on health-related topics; covering tourism; “My Wallet”, which will invite economic experts to discuss entrepreneurship, business and personal finance; “Top Motion”, which will focus on the Arab media and production industries; and “Vibes”, which will cover topics related to yoga, fashion, sports and Interior design related stories.

Aktar will also feature a rotating political show. The show is designed to provide political coverage in an easy-to-understand format, and will break down key terms and include information to help viewers understand the changing political landscape.

The move marks Al Arabiya’s continued investment in digitalisation.

The news network updated its brand identity in 2020 with a new logo design and new technology for scenography.

The renovation included working with New York-based Clickspring Design, Ross Video and Belgian firm Barco to develop new set designs, advanced cameras and network visualization solutions.

Al Arabiya has also rebuilt its broadcast studio in Dubai Media City to incorporate new technology and set design.

Mamdouh Al-Muhaini, General Manager of Al Arabiya Media Network, said at the time: “We are relaunching with new studios, new designs and, more importantly, leveraging new technologies to bring viewers to the next generation of news not only on our TV screens, but also on on our social media and digital products.”
