Filmmaker Tim Burton says his days of directing films for Hollywood studio Disney are over. The 64-year-old director, who started his animation career at Mouse House right out of college, recalls his experience directing Disney’s 2019 film Dumbo.
Burton told entertainment news site Deadline that the film, a reimagining of Walt Disney’s 1941 animated feature, was a “terrible big circus.”
“My history is where I started. I’ve been hired and fired many times throughout my career,” said the filmmaker, best known for Disney blockbusters such as The Nightmare Before Christmas, Alice in Wonderland and its sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass.
“The thing about Dumbo is that’s why I think my days at Disney are over: I realize I’m Dumbo, I’m working in this terrible big circus, and I need to escape. That movie is in for certain It’s pretty autobiographical in a way,” he added.
Dumbo, featuring a star-studded cast of Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green and Alan Arkin, underperformed at the box office and was panned by critics .
Burton also criticized how Disney shifted from smaller projects to focus on its more established Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars franchises.
“It’s become very homogeneous, very integrated. There’s less space for different types of things,” he added.
