The partnership between Timişoara International Airport “Traian Vuia” (AIT) and the UAE-based Abu Dhabi Ports Group could see the former overhaul and develop its cargo infrastructure, making it a regional business hub.
Representatives of Abu Dhabi Ports Group and Abu Dhabi ADQ met with Romanian Transport Minister Sorin Grindenu and AIT officials in Timisoara on Wednesday 10 August. They discussed the possibility of a partnership that would transform the airport into a major European business center.
Timisoara is located on the western border of Romania, which means it is connected to the national and international rail and road transport network. This will allow for fast transport of goods from the airport to the rest of the EU.
According to airport officials, the partnership is an opportunity for AIT. “This new step in discussing a possible collaboration opens up a very serious point of view,” said Daniel Stamatovici, managing director of AIT. Agpress.
The Timisoara talks were the result of a previous meeting between Minister Grindeanu and Abu Dhabi Group representatives in June. As a result of this initial meeting, the possibility of developing AIT into a logistics intermodal freight center emerged.
Construction of the new centre, which could cost as much as 300 million euros, covers 65 hectares to provide storage and transport facilities for intercontinental goods.
