Tipperary students win cultural awards at Junk Kouture World Finals in Abu Dhabi

[ad_1]

Congratulations to Ursuline Year 5 student Genevieve Keane for winning the Culture Fashion Award at the Junk Kouture World Finals in Abu Dhabi last week.

The upcycled haute couture show made from single-use items showcased 60 designs from six countries, including Ireland, UAE, US, Italy, UK and France.

Genevieve, one of ten Irish finalists to qualify for the World Finals, was awarded for her attire that reflected Ireland’s unique cultural identity.

Her winning designs were inspired by St Patrick’s and Celtic spiritual traditions, made from old curtains, curtain linings, coat linings, broken costume jewellery, leather jackets, discarded Donegal Irish wool yarn and potato sacks.

The process of putting her creations together involves tapestry, weaving, embroidery, sewing, felting and a lot of hard grafting. Genevieve has been a great ambassador for the Junk Kouture competition, her country, and of course her school.

Everyone at UCT is so proud of her, especially the teachers who promoted and supported the Junk Kouture competition at Ursuline.

Thanks to Ms. Flanagan and Mr. English who accompanied Genevieve to Abu Dhabi and helped her prepare for the World Finals.
