‘Tis season: Holiday show in New Orleans | Entertainment / Lifestyle

As the song says, “It’s the most wonderful time of year,” local theaters adorn their halls with sleigh-laden shows, mostly adapted from movies, perfect for the season.

Prelude to “White Christmas”

Before the perfect holiday movie (and now drama) “White Christmas” came “Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn”.

Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire star in the 1942 film that featured Berlin’s blockbuster “White Christmas.”

The Jefferson Society for the Performing Arts offers holiday-themed musicals, which begin Friday and run through Dec. 11.

Filled with classic Berlin tunes like “Blue Skies,” “Heat Wave” and “Hanging Out With My Kids,” the show is a fusion of classic Hollywood and Broadway.

Deep Freeze in Rivertown

“Do you want to build a snowman?”

Learn about the one-hour Disney animation for the stage of “Frozen Jr.,” which opens Friday at Rivertown’s Theater of the Performing Arts.

Bayou Belles and Holiday Food

Join the Victorious Beauties of the National WWII Museum for a special Bayou State brand of entertainment and food as Ricky Graham’s “A Louisiana Christmas” opens Sunday at BB’s Stage Door Canteen.

A highlight of the museum’s entertainment arsenal, the vocal trio performed a delightful multimedia tour of Jackson Square, through Indian Bayou and carols, with songs such as “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas,” “Christmastime in New Orleans,” and “White Christmas”. Hey, it’s happened before.

Genie Cutting at Cutting Edge

Buddy is no ordinary elf. In fact, although he was raised by elves, he is just an ordinary person. or him?

Based on the 2003 Will Ferrell and James Caan hit film, “Elf” follows Buddy as he travels to New York City to find his real father and in turn help bring Christmas spirit back to New York City.

A sweet, fun-filled musical romp opens Thursday and Friday at 7pm, Sunday at 2pm and December 10th. Tickets start at $25.access cuttingedgetheater.com website.

Covington’s “Miracle”

When “Miracle on 34th Street” hits theaters Saturday, Playmakers will bring another classic black-and-white holiday film to life.

Miracle is part of the production, as the theater partnered with Miracle League Northshore, asking patrons to bring a gift card to support the league’s work for special needs children. Some children are part of the cast of the show.

The show starts Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 2pm and runs until December 18th. Tickets start at $15.access playmakersinc.com.

A “Story” of St. Bernard

Ralphie’s wacky tales, Red Ryder BB guns and very odd lights are all part of the holiday fun at The Company: A St. Bernard Community Theatre.

A Christmas Story, based on the 1983 film, recounts Gene Shepard’s memories of growing up in the Midwest in the 1940s, including the frozen tongue incident, the refrain of “You’ll Shoot Your Eyes Out” and the “fra- GEE-lay” A lamp shaped like a woman’s leg.

Shows open Thursday to Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 2 pm at the Azienda Theater, 2000 rue de Paris, Chalmette. Tickets start at $12.access thecompanystb.com.

A little “Broadway” vibe from Kenner

“Broadway – New Orleans Style!” Watch the stage cheekily with the help of Ricky Graham and Jefferson Turner at the Rivertown Theatre.

Duo joined by Ashley Smetherman Lemler and Jesse Terrebonne Thompson deliver Broadway hit with New Orleans flavor Version.

There’s “Phantom of Gumbo,” “My Beautiful Lady of New Orleans,” and “West Coast Story.”

“Six,” which opened Tuesday at the Saenger Theater, tells the contemporary story of Henry VIII’s six wives.
