The Titanic submersible, the Titanic, which was carrying five people to the site of the wreck off the coast of Canada, went missing in the North Atlantic on Sunday. According to reports, the ship lost contact with the support ship “Polar Prince” about 1 hour and 45 minutes after descending. The five people on board reportedly included British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Daoud and his son Suleiman, founder and CEO of operating company OceanGate Stockton Rush, and Veteran French diver Paul Henri Nagiolet.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the submersible had enough oxygen to sustain the five people on board for 96 hours.
What is a submersible?
A submersible is a small boat or other vessel designed for research and exploration. Submersibles are more restricted in their movement and time spent underwater than in submarines. While a submarine is powerful enough to leave port and return to port under its own power, the submersible requires a mother ship that can be launched and recovered.
The submersible is a white tube about 6.7 meters long and 2.8 meters wide and has a top speed of 3 knots, or 5.5 kilometers (3.5 miles), according to AFP.
It is reported that Stefan Williams, an underwater robotics expert at the University of Sydney, said that although submersibles are usually used for scientific purposes, more and more submersibles are used for commercial purposes such as tourism.
“…there is some discussion in the community about the relative merits of manned submersibles versus remotely operated platforms or vehicles. You can do a lot of exploration and scientific research with unmanned vehicles,” AFP quoted him as saying words.
