Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “The Kremlin has absolute confidence and I would like to remind you of the president’s words that the main source of information is the Ministry of Defense”. This came amid reports that the attackers missed their target. Reuters reported that there were no obvious signs of casualties, after Russia claimed an airstrike killed 600 Ukrainian soldiers.

However, Russia did not say exactly when the attack took place, as Russian intelligence said it had located more than 1,300 Ukrainian soldiers in two buildings in Kramatorsk “in the past 24 hours”.

Earlier, Russia said it carried out a devastating “retaliatory strike” in eastern Ukraine on Sunday following a recent deadly attack on its forces.

The Russian Defense Ministry said “more than 600 Ukrainian servicemen were killed” as missiles hit troops stationed at two buildings used as barracks in Kramatorsk. Moscow said the attack followed a Ukrainian New Year’s Eve missile attack on the eastern Ukrainian town of Makivka.
