The team lost to the British team 3-4.
On Friday, the Indian women’s hockey team defeated the British team 3-4 in a bronze medal match at the Oi Hockey Stadium-North Stadium. With this defeat, the Indian women’s team won fourth place in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, while the British team won the Olympic medal for the third time in a row.
The British team started the game at a swift pace, and the Indian forwards did not have any chances, which in turn created good opportunities for their forward line.
But Indian goalkeeper Savita Punia came forward with some excellent saves and made sure to lead the team into the second quarter. After ES Rayer had a brilliant run from the right wing, the GB team quickly became dominant in the second quarter and they forced Indian defender Deep Grace Ekka to score an own goal. Soon after Nisha won the green card, the British team doubled the lead with Sarah Robertson’s beautiful quick shot.
The Indian team then changed their gear dramatically and scored two goals in quick succession-both through Gurjit Kaur’s penalty corner-to equalize the game with the British team. The drag flash Gurjit hit the PC and defense on the left side of Maddy Hinch, leaving them without even a chance to react. In the final moments of the first half, Vandana Katariya gained a crucial lead as an absolute poacher after D.India led the British team 3-2 into the second half.
The second half saw more determination from the GB forward. When they rushed to the right again, Pierne Weber took advantage of a wonderful move, she brought the captain’s magic to equalize the score for the European team. Udita’s rough tackle in Zone D reduced the Indian team to 10 players within 5 minutes after receiving a yellow card at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Soon, the pressure and single-player advantage paid a price for Britain, because Boudson let the team pass the PC.
The Indian forwards flocked to GB’s D in the final moments of the game, but the 2016 Rio Olympic gold medalist made sure to stay nervous and saw the team win the bronze medal.
