Lovlina becomes the second Indian woman to win an Olympic gold medal after Mary Kom
Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain confirmed her position on the podium after breaking into the semifinals of the women’s welterweight (69-75 kg) at the Tokyo Olympics.
Lovlina defeated Chinese Taipei’s former world champion Chen Nianqin in the quarterfinals of the National Stadium Arena on Friday.
In the boxing match, the semi-final loser won the bronze medal because the third place did not have the playoffs.
Lovlina defeated Nien-Chin Chen with a 4-1 split decision.
The Indian boxer narrowly won in the first round (3-2), putting pressure on his opponents. Lovlina maintained her rhythm in the second round and cleverly defended Nien-Chin’s fist with excellent footwork.
The 23-year-old woman did not relax and maintain her dominance in third place because she confirmed India’s third medal in the Olympic boxing competition.
Lovlina also became the second woman to win a gold medal after the Indian legend MC Mary Kom (won the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics).
Earlier, after Thailand’s Sudaporn Seesondee defeated her women’s lightweight (57-60 kg) 5-0, Simranjit Kaur withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics.
Seesondee defeated Simranjit to advance to the quarterfinals.
