BODLEY, Texas (AP) — Residents of northeastern Texas and southeastern Oklahoma began assessing weather damage Saturday as they work to recover and thank surviving tornadoes that swept the area It came down, killing at least one person, injuring others and leaving houses and buildings in rubble.
Shelby Villalpando, 27, of Podley, Texas, said she was having dinner with her family on Friday when a tornado warning prompted them to first gather in the hallway of their rented house. Then in the tub with her 5, 10 and 14 year olds.
“Within two minutes of getting them in the tub, we had to lie on top of the kids because everything started going crazy,” Villarpando said.
“I’ve never been so scared,” she said.
“I could hear glass shattering and everything around me shattered, but my heart and stomach sank every time I stepped out of the bathroom because I had kids and it could have been worse. …if What if our bathroom caves in like everything else? We won’t be here.”
Terimaine Davis and his son huddled in the bathtub until a tornado ripped through Friday, turning their Powderly home into a sagging pile without a roof.
“We left five minutes before the tornado really hit,” Davis, 33, told The Associated Press.
“I was in the house with my son in the tub and that was the only thing left.”
