Toto Wolff on winning in Abu Dhabi: ‘Nothing can bring it back’ | F1

[ad_1]

Lewis Hamilton loses 2021 World Championship to Max Verstappen in controversial circumstances Former race director Michael Massey failed to comply with FIA sporting rules at the end of the race.

Mercedes are yet to win so far this season, while Red Bull have won 12 of 16 races.

Verstappen is on track for his second title and could do it at the Singapore Grand Prix in early October.

In an interview with the media after the F1 Italian Grand Prix, Wolff was asked whether winning at Yas Marina in November would be “poetic justice” after Hamilton was stripped of the victory last year.

“Will that be justice? I don’t think it’s going to bring the championship back anywhere,” he said.

Mercedes performed best on high-downforce, low-speed venues such as the Hungaroring and Zandvoort.

Singapore shares similar characteristics to the above two tracks, but its track surface is notoriously rough, meaning porpoises could occur – something that plagued Mercedes at the start of the year.

“I think the track layout should fit our car, not the bumps,” Wolff added. “So I would like to show again in the simulation that it should be one of our better tracks, but I try to be cautious about any predictions for Singapore.”

If Mercedes don’t win the race this year, it will be the first time since 2011 that they have failed to win an entire campaign.

Despite the overall disappointing performance at the Italian Grand Prix, Wolff remains hopeful.

“I think it would be great if we could win a game without any qualifying penalties, I don’t think it’s possible if you ask us after Spa, but after Zandvoort , we almost won that game, and here, it’s not very good,” Wolff explained.

“I think that must be the goal. We don’t want to end the season without a race win, even if the sails are definitely in 2023. It’s a good thing for all of us in a tough season.”
