Toto Wolff dismissed the idea that Mercedes’ victory at this year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix would represent “poetic justice”.
A return to Yas Marina in the second half of November will rekindle some unpleasant memories of Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton, following a controversial incident in December.
Hamilton looked primed for a record-breaking eighth world title when a decision by then-sacked race director Michael Masi changed the atmosphere of the race, leaving Max Verstappen A chance to pass the Briton on the final lap and claim the title for himself.
Since then, with the introduction of new technical regulations this season, Mercedes has failed to win a race – although they have gotten closer as the race has gone on, while also working out how to get from their impressive Best performance in the puzzling W13 car.
After the Italian Grand Prix, which George Russell Mercedes finished third and team leader Wolff was asked if the Abu Dhabi victory represented Mercedes’ “poetic justice”.
“Will that be justice? I don’t think anything brings the championship back, so wherever,” Wolff told reporters.
The low downforce Monza is not suitable for the W13, but based on the performance of Hungaroring and Zandvoort, the next race, the Singapore Grand Prix, should be more suitable.
“I think the track layout should fit our car, not the bumps,” Wolff said of Singapore. “The simulations again suggest it should be one of our better tracks, but I try to be cautious about any predictions for Singapore.”
Mercedes has been Ferrari Second in the constructors’ standings and now 35 points behind Scuderia, Red Bull is well ahead with a 139-point advantage.
But there isn’t much interest in P2 for a team like Mercedes, who have won the constructors’ championship the past eight seasons, so Wolff just wants them to experience that kind of thing again in 2022 The feeling of winning.

“I think it would be fantastic if we could win a game without any qualifying penalties, I don’t think if you ask us after Spa it would be impossible,” Wolff said .
“But after Zandvoort we almost won that game and here (Monza) was not that good.
“I think that must be the goal. We don’t want to end the season without a race win, even if the sails are definitely in 2023. It’s a good thing for all of us in a tough season.”
