Severe flooding destroyed a hotel in the town of Puerta Vallarta, and a teenage boy from Spain was killed.

Tropical Storm Nora continued to hit Mexico’s Pacific coast with heavy rains and strong winds. The day before, it caused floods and landslides in a popular resort town, killing at least one person.

As the storm moved north and surrounded the coastline, communities in the coastal states of Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco experienced heavy rain and turbulent waves on Sunday.

The Jalisco state government said that when Nora passed through the tourist city with a Category 1 hurricane on Saturday night, a hotel in Puerto Vallarta partially collapsed due to severe flooding, and a teenager from Spain died.

Authorities said that his other family members escaped before the collapse.

Enrique Alfaro, Governor of the State of Jalisco, said: “This tragedy was caused by the partial collapse of a hotel in the center of Puerto Vallarta due to the flooding of the Cuale River.” His family and relatives who came to our port in Spain, we express to him all our support and our deepest condolences. A woman also disappeared after her car was washed away. Officials said the flood destroyed 500 houses and two people were injured in the landslide.

Six fishermen from Guerrero State were listed as missing at sea.

After the maximum sustained wind speed dropped to 70 miles per hour (110 km/h), Nora was downgraded from a Saffir-Simpson Category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm on Sunday afternoon.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), on Sunday night, the storm was about 105 miles (165 kilometers) northeast of Mazatlan and was heading north and west at a speed of 12 mph (19 km/h) move. It blows at 60 mph (96 km/h) with higher wind gusts.

NHC stated: “As the center moves roughly parallel to the Mexican coast, it is expected to gradually weaken in the next few days.” “However, if the center moves inland faster than expected, there may be a rapid weakening.”

NHC said that by later this week, Nora may produce additional heavy rainfall from Jalisco to Sonora on the west coast of Mexico.

It can also produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, as well as storm surges and huge waves.

Last week, hurricane-style lace attacked Veracruz, killing 8 people.
