Tillerson testified that Barack “called my office and expressed interest in serving as ambassador,” adding that Trump did not accept the idea and therefore did not make a follow-up request.
Tom Barrack has been charged with multiple offences, including working undercover as a foreign agent for the UAE, making false statements and obstructing justice. Barack has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Tillerson is the most high-profile witness in the trial so far, according to Associated Press. The trial is underway.
Tillerson was Trump’s secretary of state until he fell out with the then-president and was fired on Twitter.
Prosecutors allege that Barak used his contacts with Trump to advance UAE interests, including helping to arrange Trump’s relationship with Abu Dhabi’s crown prince – now president – Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al al 2017 meeting between Nahyan. In return, they claim, Barack’s business ventures received millions of dollars from the UAE.
Others have also been accused of using their proximity to the Trump presidency to advance their business interests in the Gulf state.
Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and former senior adviser to the president, has been accused of using his position to form a friendship with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
