Trump attorneys appear in court for Mar-a-Lago documents case

Donald Trump’s lawyers appeared in court on Friday for a closed-door argument as part of an ongoing investigation into the existence of classified information at the former president’s Florida estate.

The proceedings are before Chief Judge U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell in the District of Columbia federal court.

Defense attorneys were seen entering the courtroom around 2pm and were still in the courtroom more than an hour later. Lawyers spoke in closed session.

It’s unclear what the outcome of the lawsuit will be. The Washington Post reported on Thursday, relying on anonymous sources, that the Justice Department had earlier asked Judge Howell to hold Trump in contempt for failing to fully comply with a May subpoena seeking the return of his possessions. confidential documents.

The department also wants Trump’s team to appoint a custodian of records who can certify that all classified documents have been returned, the Post reported.

Additionally, the National Archives and Records Administration recovered 15 boxes containing approximately 184 classified documents in January.

The possibility that the Justice Department has not recovered all classified material has been around for months.

The FBI raided the home in August after investigators had evidence that other sensitive documents had been left there, though Trump’s representatives testified in June that all classified documents requested by the Justice Department subpoena had been found and returned.

Trump’s attorney, Christina Bobb, who made the statement and is the custodian of its records, met with the FBI in October.

She told investigators she did not draft the letter, but said another Trump attorney who actually prepared it asked her, as the designated custodian of Trump records, to include it in the letter, according to a person familiar with the matter. Sign on.

The Washington Post reported earlier this week that Trump’s attorneys found two more classified-marked documents during a recent search of a storage room in West Palm Beach, Florida. The items were then turned over to the FBI.
