Trump’s friend Tom Barak faces September trial in UAE lobbying case

Private equity investor Tom Barrack will stand trial with a business partner in September on charges of Illegal lobbying Former president Donald TrumpA federal judge said on Wednesday that his close friend represents the United Arab Emirates.

The jury’s selection is set for September 7. The trial could begin as early as the same day or next week, Judge Brian Cogan said at a court hearing on Wednesday.

At that hearing, Kogan, prosecutors, and defense lawyers also discussed a timetable for reviewing classified government materials expected to be used in the case.

An indictment accuses the three of them of secretly advancing the interests of the UAE by influencing Trump’s 2016 campaign foreign policy stance and the US government’s stance during the first half of Trump’s presidency.

The prosecutor claimed that during his alleged illegal lobbying for Trump, Barak also informally provided advice on Middle East policy to U.S. officials and sought to appoint the U.S. government as a special envoy for the Middle East issue.

Barak has never registered as an agent of the UAE with the U.S. government. In an interview with federal law enforcement officials in June 2019, he was also accused of obstructing justice and making multiple false statements.

Last summer, a senior official of the Department of Justice said: “The actions alleged in the indictment are simply a betrayal of US officials, including the former president.”
