Truss or Sunak?Britons eagerly await appointment of new prime minister | World News

[ad_1]

London: The situation outside Britain’s parliament was changing rapidly on Tuesday, with Foreign Secretary Liz Truss expected to announce the new prime minister.

The streets were relatively calm earlier, but as the time drew closer to the announcement, it started to get a little chaotic between the day’s tourists, media personnel covering events and the arrival of a handful of protesters. The Metropolitan Police patrol the streets from outside Parliament all the way to 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the British Prime Minister, with machine guns and bright neon vests dotting every street.

The race for prime minister was sparked when Boris Johnson announced his resignation in July after a series of scandals saw dozens of ministers and government officials resign in record time. Johnson has offered to remain as caretaker prime minister and is expected to formally end his term on Tuesday after visiting the Queen at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where she currently lives.

Truss and former chancellor Rishi Sunak are the last two remaining after several rounds of votes by Conservative members in parliament in July. At 12:30 p.m. local time today, after nearly a month of postal voting by party members at the grassroots level, the next prime minister and party leader are about to be announced.

Polls show that Tras is expected to win the final match despite Sunak’s unbeaten lead in all previous rounds. But the locals were not impressed. The protest group SODEM showed up at the intersection of Parliament Street at noon in the morning and held several signs, including one that read: “The liars, charlatans and charlatans of the corrupt Conservative government, get them out now.”

They called for a general election and played what could be understood as resistance music, including the famous Italian protest song Bella Ciao and British pop group Fun Boy Three’s The Lunatics.

“I think she’s going to be useless,” member Louise Brown said. “I don’t think she is [Liz Truss] will fully address the cost of living crisis. ”

Despite speculation that Truss is expected to announce an energy price cap, the group is not convinced. “We need to hear the plan first. She obviously has to pretend to do something, but I personally don’t think that’s enough.”

It won’t be long before we’ll find out if Truss will be the next leader, as expected, if Sunak surprises her by defeating her. The end result will also be an important indicator of whether Truss or Sunak can tout majority support, or whether they have to keep an eye on the other. It could also allow for a stronger comeback for Johnson if the game draws to a close. As of now, everything in and out of Parliament is constantly changing.
