Tsunami warning after a magnitude 8.2 earthquake in the Alaska Peninsula-News

Authorities said that late Wednesday, a shallow 8.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Alaska Peninsula, triggering a tsunami warning in the area.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) stated that the earthquake occurred at 10:15 pm local time (0615 GMT Thursday) with a focal depth of 35 kilometers.

In Alaska, the National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC) issued warnings to the south, peninsula, and Pacific coast from the entrance of Hinchinbrook to the Unimark Pass. It also issued a “Tsunami Warning” for the State of Hawaii in the United States.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) stated that it is investigating the possibility of a tsunami threat to the US state of Hawaii and the US Pacific Territory Guam.

The public broadcaster NHK stated that the Japan Meteorological Agency is investigating the possibility of a tsunami hitting Japan.

The New Zealand authorities also stated that they are assessing whether there are any dangers in the coastal areas.

The US NTWC stated that it is assessing the level of tsunami risk in other Pacific coast areas of the US and Canada.

The earthquake occurred approximately 91 kilometers east-southeast of Perryville, Alaska. It is about 800 kilometers (500 miles) from Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, seven aftershocks followed, two of which exceeded 6.0.
