Tunisia issues arrest warrant for former presidential candidate | Middle East News

He added that a person suspected of helping the couple leave the country was arrested the day before, but did not elaborate.

Algeria and Tunisia are bound by an agreement that stipulates that either country can extradite “any person who is prosecuted or convicted” of the other.

Any extradition request must be “attached with official documents from the authorities.”

Nabil Karoui founded the Tunisian private channel Nessma TV, which is partly owned by former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Accusations against human rights defenders

On Monday, human rights groups accused Tunisia of handing it over to Algerian political activist Slimane Bouhafs, who was sentenced to prison in 2016 for “insulting Islam”.

Tunisian media and social networks have speculated that the Karui brothers were arrested in exchange for the handover of Bukhafs.

Since 2017, Karui has been under investigation into money laundering and tax evasion cases.

He was arrested in 2019 and jailed for more than a month at the height of the presidential campaign.

Karui ranked second in the 2019 elections. Said is a retired law professor and political newcomer because voters rejected the political class that has ruled since the 2011 revolution.
