Turkish soldier killed in mortar attack in northern Iraq | PKK News

[ad_1]

The Turkish Ministry of Defense stated that the Turkish army retaliated against the attackers and three PKK fighters were killed.

Kurdish insurgents launched a mortar attack on a Turkish military base in northern Iraq, wounding a Turkish soldier who later died in the hospital.

The Turkish Ministry of Defense stated in a statement that its troops immediately retaliated against those who launched the attack. Three Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighters were “destroyed”. This term is usually used to mean being killed.

“One of our brave soldiers was seriously injured in a mortar attack by PKK terrorists on one of our bases. He was taken to the hospital and could not be rescued,” the Ministry of Defense said on Thursday.

“We retaliated immediately. According to the preliminary information received, three terrorists were eliminated,” adding that the attack took place near the Turkish border.

The Turkish army often conducts operations on the rear base of the PKK in northern Iraq.

Turkey launched an offensive—air, and sometimes by land—in April, targeting PKK facilities in Iraq. Ankara considers PKK to be a “terrorist” organization.

The PKK’s pan-Kurdish agenda — a homeland that spans Syria, Turkey, Iraq, and Iran — often brings it into conflict with the Kurdish Autonomous Government in northern Iraq, which seeks to maintain good relations with Ankara.

According to the security agreement reached with Saddam Hussein’s regime, the Turkish army has maintained a network of bases in neighboring northern Iraq since the mid-1990s.

Since 1984, the PKK has launched a rebellion in the predominantly Kurdish region of southeastern Turkey, killing more than 40,000 people.
