Ian hits Cuba: Hurricane Ian moved west of Cuba this morning as a Category 3 storm with top winds of 125 mph. The storm cloud extends out about 115 miles from the center. Storm Ian is expected to intensify into a Category 4 storm as it moves through the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico toward the west coast of Florida. On its current road, it is expected to slam into Tampa and St. Petersburg.
DOT Approves Electric Vehicle Charging Networks: The U.S. Department of Transportation said this morning that it has finally approved plans to build a network of electric vehicle charging stations across all 50 states. The federal government plans to spend $5 billion over the next five years on the network, placing charging stations about 50 miles apart. In total, 500,000 charging devices will be installed.
New program to tackle hunger: The Biden administration released a plan this morning that it says aims to end hunger in America by 2030. These include expanding benefits provided to the poor to help them buy food. It will also expand nutrition and obesity counseling services offered under Medicare and Medicaid. A program to provide free meals to children during school and summer vacations will be expanded.
Russian disinformation operations disabled: Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, reported this morning that it had discovered and disabled a sprawling Russian network that had been spreading disinformation on various platforms. It includes more than 1,600 fake Facebook accounts and more than 60 websites created to look like legitimate newspaper websites.
Natural gas pipeline leaks found: Three leaks have been found in a pipeline used to transport natural gas from Russia to countries in Central and Western Europe. The pipeline runs below the Baltic Sea. The Danish prime minister raised the possibility of disruption.
Expected merger announcement Friday: The British Ministry of Defence said Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to announce the annexation of four Ukrainian territories on Friday. Continue to vote to be part of Russia in sham elections organized by Russians occupying parts of Ukraine.
