U.S. immigration advocates criticize Biden’s asylum policy as “cruel” Immigration News

The Biden administration stated that evictions are necessary to prevent American detention centers from being overwhelmed during the pandemic.

Immigration advocates criticized U.S. President Joe Biden’s asylum policy, calling the deportation of immigrants and other deterrent measures at the U.S.-Mexico border “cruel, illegal and ineffective.”

In a letter to Biden and senior officials on Friday, more than 100 organizations urged the Democratic president to restore the ability of all immigrants to apply for asylum in the United States and avoid any new policies restricting access to asylum.

Biden promised to adopt a more humane immigration approach, overturning many restrictive policies of his Republican predecessor and former President Donald Trump.

But the Democratic president retained an order called “Article 42”, which is one of Trump’s most restrictive measures, allowing US authorities to deport migrants who have crossed the border back to Mexico.

In recent months, the number of border arrests has risen to the highest level in 20 years, which has intensified criticism from Republicans that Biden has lifted some of Trump’s restrictions to encourage more people to enter the United States.

At the same time, some Democrats urged Biden to terminate Article 42, and supporters of asylum seekers stated that the government’s actions contradicted Biden’s promises.

The government stated that evictions are necessary to prevent U.S. detention centers from being overwhelmed during the coronavirus pandemic, which they believe will pose risks to government workers, immigrants, and the public.

White House spokesperson Vedant Patel (Vedant Patel) said that the government has listened to health experts on its Article 42 decisions issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

These groups urge Biden not to adopt any policy that forces immigrants to wait in Mexico to resolve their US case, which they say “will undoubtedly put individuals at risk and violate US asylum laws.”

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Majorcas said on Thursday that the United States will expand the online asylum registration system, hoping that asylum seekers can apply remotely, adding that more changes will be announced in the coming days.

Majorcas did not specify which asylum seekers are eligible to use the online system.

Last week, the government began to fly some Central American and Mexican immigrants arrested at the U.S.-Mexico border to southern Mexico to deter crosses.

In the letter to Biden, these groups stated that they were “seriously concerned” about these flights, and there were reports that migrants were subsequently sent to remote areas of Guatemala.

Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the Los Angeles-based National Immigration Law Center, said the flights show that the Biden administration is taking a stricter stance.

She said that Biden seems to be only concerned about arrest and deportation, not the rights of asylum seekers.

“This absolutely contradicts what the Biden administration said they will do,” she said.
