November 23 (UPI) — On Wednesday, the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned three Iranian security officials for their continued aggressive crackdown on human rights protests in Iran led by women.
“The Iranian regime is reportedly targeting and shooting its own children as they take to the streets demanding a better future,” Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson said in a statement said in. “The abuse of protesters in Iran, including most recently in Mahabad, must stop.”
Among those sanctioned are Hassan Asgari, governor of the Kurdish city of Sanandaj in northwestern Iran; Alireza Moradi, commander of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s law enforcement forces; Mohammad Taghi Osanloo , the IRGC ground force commander who oversees the province of Western Albaijan.
The Treasury Department’s sanctions statement said Iranian security officials were stepping up “aggressive actions against the Iranian people as part of their ongoing repression of peaceful protests against a regime that denies the basic human rights of its people, especially women and girls.”
