Moonwatching Committee confirms official date for Holy Month closer to that date

published: Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at 9:09 pm

According to astronomical calculations, the beginning of Ramadan is only 100 days away.

The Sharjah Planetarium at the Ministry of Culture and Information announced the countdown to March 23 next year on Twitter.

Earlier this year, Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, a member of the International Union of Astronomy and Space Science, stated that the first day of Ramadan would most likely be Thursday, March 23, 2023. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and Muslims fast for approximately 30 days from sunrise to sunset.

This is a holy time when believers fast from dawn to dusk. This period is from Fajr, the first prayer of the day, to the evening prayer of Maghrib. Fasting duration varies with sunrise and sunset.

The official date of the holy month confirmed by the Moon Watching Committee is closer to that date.

Likewise, the first day of Eid al-Fitr is expected to be Friday, April 21, 2023. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. According to the Hijri calendar, the dates are from Ramadan 29 to Shawwal 3. According to astronomical calculations, this will be from Thursday, April 20 to Sunday, April 23. The actual date is subject to lunar observations.
