Residents of the UAE capital are privileged to live in one of the most diverse and prosperous cities in the world. They enjoy the best entertainment, food and fashion in the world, and opportunities abound. It’s an amazing place to live, but there can be a downside: Lifestyle diseases are on the rise, says public health England expert and international adviser to the Social Change Programme.

“Cardiovascular disease and diabetes are the number one health risk in developed countries. Convenience and easy access to goods are almost synonymous with progress,” Dr John Bromley, who contributed to the design and concept of 360-degree views of Abu Dhabi, told Khaleej Times. . No need to work for their food. No need to cook. No need to even leave the house. Because of this advancement, we as a society are heavier and more sedentary than ever before.”

According to research, one in five people in the UAE suffers from type 2 diabetes and this number is expected to double by 2040. “This is a dangerous problem, but the trend is reversible,” Dr. Bromley emphasized.

Lifestyle changes should be long-term, not just a few weeks in January when most people start implementing their New Year’s resolutions.

“If the New Year’s resolutions of joining the gym, eating healthier and losing holiday weight worked, we wouldn’t be facing these challenges.”

Dr Bromley noted that community members must learn from the UAE’s successful experience in managing the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The country launched a national, inter-government public health campaign that encouraged us to do our part to make communities stronger and safer, and it paid off. The people of the UAE are proving that when they work together, they can Unbelievable things are done.”

In December 2022, Abu Dhabi Sports Council launched Abu Dhabi 360, a community-based initiative dedicated to whole-person health. Dr Bromley, who worked on the plan, emphasized that it will lead the community towards a healthier and happier future.

“Creating a health program that really works is not easy. Many have tried and failed. But having designed and led effective public health campaigns around the world, I can say with confidence that Abu Dhabi 360 and the Emirate It’s not like anything else I’ve ever seen.”

When asked how Abu Dhabi 360 will make the emirate one of the healthiest and happiest places in the world for future generations, Dr Bromley offered seven tips:

1. This is based on evidence: Abu Dhabi 360 is based on a tried and tested behavioral theory called COM-B, which holds that to change their behaviour, people need competence, motivation and opportunity. Abu Dhabi 360 offers all three.

2. Focus on overall health: Abu Dhabi 360 is not a weight loss or exercise program. It’s a whole-person wellness program designed to help people invest in all aspects of their health—because as we’ve learned over the past few years, there can be no physical health without mental or social health.

3. It is accessible: Using multiple mediums, Abu Dhabi 360 offers something for everyone – an app with support tools and rewards, encouraging articles and meditation exercises, a comprehensive calendar of sporting events and family events, community challenges and more.

4. Take a personalized approach: There’s a customizable path for everyone from fitness buffs to those who can’t catch a ball or do pushups. The creators of Abu Dhabi 360 wanted the community to start moving in a way that made them feel good, enjoyed exercising rather than viewing it as a chore, and showed them that healthy food can also be tasty and fun.

5. Inclusiveness: 360 views of Abu Dhabi are suitable for people of all ages, sizes and ability levels, including the determined.

6. Localization: It was designed specifically for the people of Abu Dhabi, taking into account their local health concerns, climate and culture.

7. There is a problem: Even the most respected research and sophisticated programming won’t bring about change if the community doesn’t come together. One program is not enough. Abu Dhabi needs a community-wide health movement. So, starting in 2023, you can buy a gym membership and look up some salad recipes.Or you can make a commitment to be a long-term investment in yourself, your family and your community
