Pet abandonment cases in the UAE are growing exponentially, with many animal welfare groups saying they are overwhelmed by the number of abandoned pets.

Groups such as Animals and Us Fujairah (AAUF) and Stray Dog Centre UAQ (SDC-UAQ) have posted on social media several incidents of horrific cases of abuse, neglect and abandonment over the past few weeks.

This has forced some royals to step in, saving and in some cases adopting the animals. Now, animal welfare groups are calling on families to think twice before getting a new pet.

You may need to reconsider your decision if you plan to adopt a pet for any of the following reasons:

Your child wants it: Many parents end up owning a pet because their child wants one. However, because of their short attention spans, children are likely to forget about pets once the novelty wears off. “Before adopting a pet, it’s important for families to sit together and discuss responsibilities,” says Michelle from AAUF. “If family members have any hesitations, they can always choose to have a pet. With foster care, families will be able to gauge what the responsibility of caring for a pet is and whether they can make it a part of their lives.”

Everyone gets one: Adopting a pet is a lifetime commitment and should not be taken lightly. Rather than viewing pets as accessories or cute additions to family photos, animal welfare experts encourage people to view pets as creatures in need of love, care and support. “A lot of people have pets because it’s a trend,” Michelle said. “It’s a fad and I believe it’s one of the reasons we’re seeing so many cases of pet abandonment.”

Exotic: For many people, the appeal of a cute hybrid or purebred exotic pet cannot be ignored. However, once the charm wears off, people start having problems. While some people face excessive hair loss that may exacerbate their allergies, others realize that pets are not for their families. This leads to abandonment.

Pet adoption is free: Pet adopters often underestimate the cost of owning a pet. “Veterinary bills are expensive,” Michelle said. “Many people don’t think about what will happen when they have to move back to their country, or have a pet with a life-threatening illness. I always advise people to have a Plan B and a Plan C when adopting a pet.”

How hard can it be? : Many people underestimate the time and effort it takes to care for a pet. “Many people make decisions based on emotions without fully understanding the responsibilities of pet ownership,” says Amirah William, founder of SDC-UAQ. She encourages potential adopters to do their research well and do good things before deciding to adopt a pet. adequate preparation.
