From the stories of 9-year-olds who are about to meet their dying mothers, to those revolving around loneliness, these films and animations are sure to capture the hearts of SIFF audiences
The UAE’s growing Korean fan base is looking forward to the upcoming Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFF), which will take place from 10 to 15 October at the Al Jawaher Reception and Conference Centre in Sharjah.
This year’s SIFF will screen six compelling and emotional films – selected for their originality and masterful storytelling. Depicting universal themes and emotions, the Korean selection includes four features and two shorts.
Here are the films sure to capture the hearts of SIFF audiences:
1. The children of director Ji Won-ri are very good
Chosen as the grand opening film, the film tells a heartwarming story with deep tenderness and vulnerability.
It explores family bonds, friendships, and children’s ability to cope with tragedy.
The award-winning 2021 film follows the adventures of a 9-year-old boy who joins friends on a journey to visit his dying mother in the hospital.
2. Paper Flowers by Hoon Koh
The 2020 film, starring Kim Yoo-jin, known professionally as Eugene, depicts the moral dilemma of a funeral director joining a major funeral services company that provides services based on what clients pay.
The relentless corporatization of funeral services, which rejects traditional customs, such as placing paper flowers as a tribute to the deceased, is the film’s main narrative and also interweaves the different struggles of the other three protagonists.
3. Sung kyu Cho’s Croissant
It follows a young hero as he makes unconventional career choices inspired by a female baker who follows her passion rather than government job security.
4. Lee Soon Sung “My Perfect Roommate”
The film addresses the theme of loneliness, especially in the lives of older adults. It weaves a beautiful story of a young college student and an old lady who come to share a roof, learn to adjust and form a bond of friendship.
5. Cats in the Art Park, animation by Kim Herian
Young audiences at SIFF 2022 will be captivated by the antics of a house-sized cat in The Cat in the Art Park, a 2020 production for ages 5-10 animated film.
The 5-minute film depicts the chaos that happens when an art park becomes a playground for giant cats – some panicked, others rejoicing.
6. Seung-bae Jeon’s battery dad
This Korean short film is a tribute to fathers and their hard work for their family. Using felt puppets to convey the warmth of the story, the film – crafted over the course of a year – explores how the battery dad who keeps everything running at home saves his family from a downpour. The director was inspired by his father and his own relationship with his son.
