Accompanied by dignitaries, Sheikh Hasher bin Maktoum toured the exhibition and summit. As the leading event in the Middle East dedicated to advancing precision medicine, PMES provides an important platform for key stakeholders including regulators, providers and researchers to collaborate and drive further developments in healthcare across the region.

In a specially recorded message at the opening ceremony of PMES 23 today, Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technology at the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology and Secretary-General of the UAE Genome Council, explained that it fits these , stakeholders gathered in the UAE.

Al Amiri said, “This gathering of scientists, doctors, policy makers, entrepreneurs and investors is an important part of the development of healthcare and medtech, and it is fitting that the industry meets in the UAE, where technology, innovation and entrepreneurship converge. The past few years have shown how quickly medicine can advance when governments, regulators, businesses and researchers are all moving in the same direction. The world has proven that when we focus on overcoming common challenges, We can mobilize resources and capabilities to accelerate innovation and advance science. Now — more than ever — we need to leverage our combined strengths to drive further advances in healthcare.”

Al Amiri emphasized that the world’s population will reach 8.5 billion by 2030, which will place even greater pressure on public health, “By investing in transformative healthcare solutions today, we can help create healthier, more Happy societies, even with expanding populations. Precision medicine is one of the key areas in changing the way healthcare systems work, improving quality of life and helping to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.”

Al Amiri also highlighted the UAE National Genome Strategy, launched in March this year, which aims to develop capabilities and implement genome-based initiatives over the next decade. She added: “This strategy will lead to groundbreaking applications of precision medicine that will transform public health and not only help provide the best healthcare and quality of life for people, but also provide significant opportunities for business and investors.”

PMES 23 brings together key figures in healthcare with discussions focusing on clinical applications of precision medicine in cancer, rare diseases, pharmacogenomics, and stem cell and gene therapies.

The program also includes lectures and exhibits on the latest advanced AI applications in personalized medicine, and how AI and other technological advances in precision medicine can directly aid the patient’s journey.

In his opening address, Dr. Amin Hussein Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for Health Regulation at the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), said that the future of medicine lies in precision medicine. “Currently available drugs to patients are a treatment approach for a variety of similar diseases. “Future medicine will be highly personalized by integrating gene therapy and genotype or phenotype analysis using blood tests, taking into account specific patient factors such as their disease,” he added.

Also present at the event was Dr Thekra Hasan Mohamed, Director of Zayed Herbal Complex and Life Sciences Projects, who noted that precision medicine is a medical approach that is revolutionizing the way patients are treated. “The UAE has recognized the enormous potential of precision medicine and has begun integrating this approach into the country’s healthcare system. With the launch of the largest genome study in the region, the UAE Genome Project, we aim to focus on Utilize the latest technology and scientific discoveries to analyze genetic data, monitor health conditions, and provide patients with personalized treatment and care plans,” she added.

“Most importantly, precision medicine can effectively address the high incidence of various genetic and non-genetic diseases in the region. To achieve this, most members of the GCC have been investing heavily in national programs such as the UAE Genome Initiative, This will greatly improve the quality of life of patients.”
