Abu Dhabi: Experts gather in Abu Dhabi for this weekend’s Diabetes Primary Care Conference hosted by Mubadala Health partner HealthPlus Diabetes and Endocrinology Centre.
The one-day conference, with the theme “Diabetes at the Heart”, was initiated by Alexander Schonfelder, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the UAE, and Dr. Mohammed Al Khatib, Consultant Chairman and Director of Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Diabetes, HealthPlus Diabetes and Endocrinology Center.
Schonfelder said: “The UAE has made tremendous progress in healthcare over the past decade. As the cooperation between Germany and the UAE continues to grow, it is a testament to the strong relationship between our two countries.”
Meeting attendees underscored the need to address the rise in chronic diseases, participating in a series of sessions. These sessions aim to guide the medical community in raising awareness and education to address some of the contributing factors that are accelerating the diabetes epidemic in the UAE and the wider region.
Dr Al Khatib said: “As we see an upward trend in the prevalence of diabetes globally and the region is prone to these lifestyle diseases, the timing of the conference cannot be more important. The conference aims to shed light on the latest guidelines, research and development in the field of diabetes. technology.”
He added: “It also serves as a platform to help the healthcare community understand the impact of the pandemic on people’s lifestyles and health; in particular, we’ve seen an increase in young people diagnosed with diabetes, which we’ve seen before from This scale has never been seen before. As we continue to address one of the most pressing problems in this field, it is imperative for the medical community to urge people to take care of their health.”

The meeting agenda covers issues in the field of diabetes, including obesity and metabolism, remission, vision management, burdens and risks associated with weight loss, and addressing dyslipidemia, one of the major cardiovascular side effects of diabetes. The meeting also discussed the role of nutrition in the management of early diabetes, the latest guidelines and techniques for managing the disease, and areas of research that will help uncover future prospects for this chronic disease.
Dr Hazem Al Momani, Chief of Surgery and Consultant General Surgery, Danat Al Emarat Hospital, Abu Dhabi, UAE, on Type 2 Diabetes after Weight Loss – Relief, Burden and Risk, said: “Diabetes and obesity are becoming a disease of young people. We know that with early-onset obesity, the likelihood of developing diabetes increases at a young age.
