Launched by The Diplomacy Lab in October, the UAE Africa Connect initiative works with artists and galleries from or representing Africa at art fairs in the Abu Dhabi Art Initiative.
UAE Africa Connect is present in the community and social hub space to share information about the platform, and to grow and learn about upcoming events and opportunities.
Dyala Nusseibeh, Director of Arts Abu Dhabi, said: “Art Abu Dhabi’s UAE-Africa Connections initiative is an important initiative that underscores the potential for greater cooperation at the cultural level between the Gulf region and Sub-Saharan Africa. Held in 2018 The conversation paralleled their presentation spaces with two key galleries, Kó Gallery from Nigeria and Afriart Gallery from Uganda, and Nina Olatoke, founder of the All Africa Festival, chaired by curator Munira Al Sayegh.
“The ensuing group discussions and important topics raised paved the way for future collaborations that we all look forward to.”
Farshied Jabarkhyl, Head of Diplomacy Lab, said: “The UAE is uniquely positioned to build this platform as it places a high value on the power of cultural collaboration and, more specifically, what can be achieved through cultural diplomacy. With a particular focus on the arts, these platforms Can create strong and influential avenues for cooperation and development between countries.”
UAE Africa Connect’s work will be through intercultural dialogue sessions, research, empowerment, investment and youth engagement, with the aim of highlighting and strengthening the rich cultural histories of these countries and the positive impact of working with Africa on the creative economy.
