(Menaffin– Khaleej Times)

Abu Dhabi’s Al Bateen Executive Airport has reopened after successfully completing works including runway upgrades to handle larger flights.

In May, Abu Dhabi Airports announced the temporary closure of Al Bateen Executive Airport, a dedicated business aviation airport. The expansion was completed in less than 90 days, including the resurfacing and widening of the existing 3.2km runway to accommodate wide-body aircraft, in addition to the construction of a substantial new border wall, upgraded ground lighting, enhanced signage and landscaping .

Another major part of the work completed was to upgrade and refurbish the airport ground lighting at Al Bateen Executive Airport, authorizing the airport to operate Code 4D aircraft.

The major refurbishment project will allow the airport to meet growing operational demands while meeting the highest levels of safety, compliance and certification.

The project is a close collaboration between the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and Abu Dhabi Airports, following all necessary regulatory frameworks to ensure the highest level of compliance. All necessary approvals were received without delay.

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA, said: “The refurbishment of Al Bateen Executive Airport demonstrates our aviation partners in the UAE’s commitment to investing in the safety, modernity and sustainability of the region’s only dedicated executive airport.

From project inception to completion, the partnership with Abu Dhabi Airports ensures the highest compliance with national standards, regulations, guidance materials and international best practices as outlined by the GCAA. “

Shareef Hashim Al Hashmi, CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, said: “In line with our strategic objectives, Abu Dhabi Airports continues to invest in the development and maintenance of our world-class infrastructure.

The upgrade of Al Bateen Executive Airport will bring some tangible benefits such as increased airport capacity to accommodate larger aircraft, extended runway life and reduced maintenance time and costs. “

As part of the refurbishment process, more than 105,000 tons of asphalt were used in different areas of the runway, including its shoulder areas and taxiways, totaling approximately 240,000 square meters. In addition to 15.5 kilometers of pipelines and the installation of more than 400 new manholes, 23 kilometers of cables were laid.

Frank McCrorie, Chief Operating Officer of Abu Dhabi Airports, added: “Over 800 dedicated staff were involved in the successful completion of this project, while ensuring minimal disruption to residents, demonstrating our collaboration and commitment to driving development forward.

As the only dedicated administrative airport in the Middle East, we are committed to providing our customers with security facilities that meet their requirements. “
