Energy Agreement

UAE and German officials have signed a new Energy Security and Industry Accelerator (ESIA) agreement to accelerate projects of mutual interest in the areas of energy security, decarbonization and climate action.

The agreement was signed in the presence of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and German Chancellor Olaf Schultz.

As part of the alliance, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has reached an agreement with RWE to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes by the end of the year. This will be used for the commissioning of the Floating LNG Import Terminal in Brunsbüttel, Germany.Official news agency ADNOC has reserved 2023 LNG cargoes for German customers WAM report.

Under the proposed ESIA agreement, the two countries will explore further opportunities to accelerate growth and collaboration across the hydrogen value chain.

In addition, Masdar in the UAE will explore opportunities in the German North Sea and Baltic offshore wind markets, which could generate up to 10GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. It will depend on whether German policy and regulatory requirements are met in between the two countries.

Earlier this year, the Abu Dhabi-based company signed several agreements with German customers, including demonstration cargoes of low-carbon ammonia, a hydrogen carrier fuel, from Steag and Aurubis. The first of these shipments arrived in Hamburg earlier this month.

ADNOC also completed the UAE’s first direct diesel delivery to Germany in September 2022 and has reached terms with Wilhelm Hoyer & Co. to supply up to 250,000 tonnes of diesel per month by 2023.

The agreement was signed into action by Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, UAE Climate Envoy, ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO, and Dr. Franziska Brantner, Parliamentary Secretary of State at the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate.

“With ESIA, we are able to rapidly implement strategic lighthouse projects in key areas such as renewable energy, hydrogen, LNG and climate action,” Olaf Scholz said.

“As we embrace the energy transition, ADNOC is fully committed to accelerating and investing in energy security, decarbonization and climate action projects as we continue to be a responsible and reliable low-carbon energy supplier and trusted exporter,” Dr. Sultan Al Added Jaber.

ADNOC has been supplying energy products to its international customers. The company is now vigorously expanding its natural gas business, accelerating production to meet domestic and international demand, the statement said.
