Abu Dhabi will enforce a minimum speed limit of 120 km/h on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Road from April and violators will be fined Dh400 from May 1, police said on Thursday.

Abu Dhabi Police officials explained that the maximum speed on the main highway is 140 km/h and the minimum speed on the first and second lanes on the left is 120 km/h.

Slower vehicles will be allowed to use a third lane, which has no prescribed minimum speed. Police stressed that heavy vehicles – which should use the last lane of the road – will not be subject to minimum speed limits.

Once the rules come into force in April, warning notices will be issued to those traveling below 120km/h in designated lanes. Then on May 1, a Dh400 fine will be imposed, the authorities said.

Major General Ahmed Saif bin Zaytoun Al Muhairi, head of central operations, urged drivers to obey traffic rules.

“Implementing a minimum speed limit aims to improve road safety. It will encourage slower vehicles to use appropriate lanes,” he said.

The official also reminded drivers to always make sure the road is clear and keep a safe distance from other vehicles before changing lanes.
