The UAE or United Arab Emirates has launched a new unemployment insurance scheme to push for reforms to attract more investment and talent in the country amid growing competition.

The plan was first announced in May 2022. It provides financial assistance for up to 3 months to unemployed private and public sector employees.

Both UAE citizens and international migrants are eligible for the programme.

Details of UAE’s new immigrant unemployment insurance scheme

The new social security scheme aims to ensure a decent living for UAE citizens and international employees while they lose their jobs.

Unemployed professionals can receive 60% of their previously earned wages. This is roughly equivalent to AED 5,445.29 or USD 20,000 per month in aid.

  • part-time worker
  • Minors under the age of 18
  • people who have retired from the workforce

Traditionally, permits to reside in Gulf countries such as the UAE have been associated with employment. Recent reforms have made it easier for UAE residents whose visas have been cancelled to stay in the country for six months, up from 30 days previously.
